Pink Progression: Collaborations at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities from June 4 – August 23, 2020. Opening Reception, June 4, 6 – 9 p.m. Click here to see more events inspired by the 100th anniversary of the women’s vote @ the Arvada Center.

The year 2020 is the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. This historic centennial offers us the opportunity to commemorate a milestone and recognize the consecutive dates in which all women attained the right to vote in America. In order to inspire social change, collaboration must occur. Working together allows us to share our knowledge and experience, while challenging each other to move outside of our comfort zone and discover a fusion of narratives.

Pink Progression commemorates, celebrates, and builds on the solidarity established during these marches, addressing concepts, such as feminism, human rights, gender identity, and inclusivity. My collaborator Patricia Mcinroy and I are in the process of completing a combination of documentary-style interviews/photo based portraits. This project aims to address current/future voting among women.  More specifically a glance back at the history and its relationship to the way woman vote today.  Women interviewed chose among a variety of topics including: climate change, health care, abortion, immigration and gun control.

“Mixed Bag - Woman’s Thoughts on Current Affairs”

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the women’s right to vote in the United States, “Mixed Bag - Woman’s Thoughts on Current Affairs” is a body of work intended to extrapolate from contemporary American women, current political and social topics. Approaching women on the street, we asked what their major concerns are on current affairs.  These topics included but were not limited to:  health care, abortion, gun control, immigration and climate change. We made every effort to get a diverse sampling  of women and allowed the interview to veer off topic organically.  We filmed the interview and took photographic portraits as part of the interaction.  We hope their images and words operate as a small snapshot of what women in our country today, think is relevant.

There are many voices in our culture and we worked hard to obtain a diverse population to film.  We aimed for diversity in age, ethnicity and location. Had we not hit a pandemic, our pool of participants would have been larger and more diverse.

We began collaborating on our project Spring of 2019.   The collaborative process was comfortable immediately.  Even though we knew each other in previous contexts, we still had to build trust and figure out how to work together.  Working solo was more in our individual repertoires, than teaming up with another person.  Conducting our interviews together was the highlight of the experience;  collaboratively, it eased our hesitation in approaching strangers and in turn we felt more excitement and joy, as opposed to working alone.

None of us could have predicted how drastically our world would change in a matter of days.  We are immensely grateful and relieved that we began our project a year ago and therefore had a decent body of work.  We discussed including some more polarized voices so that our statement of work would be well rounded, however due to the pandemic that was not possible.  It is arguable, that we could have continued working and included content that would have morphed and changed due to the current world crisis;  but  we both discussed a feeling of apathy towards conducting zoom interviews as opposed to being out in the community.   It is our belief that the body of work you are viewing represents the passion and intellect of both the artists and subjects and feel proud of the work we accomplished.
